Easy Clay Projects Art Lesson Plans

Working with clay is perhaps one of the most rewarding experiences of a child’s elementary art career. All that squeezing and shaping and then finally….a finished piece! Kids love them and parents treasure them. It’s a win-win situation. But sometimes, working with clay can be a daunting experience. Believe me, I’ve been there! Hopefully, I can take the fear out of working with clay and show you that it can be done with little or no experience. If you have a kiln and the desire, you’re all set! If you don’t have a kiln, the projects demonstrated are easily adaptable for any air dry clay.

The lessons in this 19-page art booklet are practically fail-proof. I’ve compiled my best tips from seven years of ceramic experience and broken up the information into categories:

  • Supplies (what to get, where to get it and what the heck is it in the first place)

  • Working with Clay (some pointers to prevent blow-ups…not from you, but in the kiln!)

  • Painting/Underglaze information

  • Glazing

  • The Kiln (and why it’s not such a scary thing)

Complete photo-tutorials of seven projects are detailed:

  • Basic Pinch Pot
  • Decorative Coasters (A GREAT teacher’s gift)
  • Leaf Bowls
  • Pumpkins
  • Guppies
  • Frogs
  • Dinosaurs
  • Wall Plaques
  • Plus a few extra project ideas thrown in.

Thank you for this! I am a new art teacher (just started in February) and I have a wonderful kiln, but I was so scared of that big scary thing that I decided not to do any clay until next year. ((My first thoughts were – What are all these different Cones for??? Yep, I’m a kiln NEWBIE)) This guide has made me a little less scared. Thanks again!

    • Patty says:

Yay! You will make some mistakes, but we all have. Just go ahead and do it. SO much fun and the kids truly love clay. As for those cones…they’re used for testing the kiln’s heat. All you need to do is fire according to clay/underglaze instruction. (unless you have a kiln setter, which is a different story!)

I love your site! We no longer have an art teacher at our school and I am determined to give my kids a good art program next year. Just wanted to double check, we don’t have a kiln…can we still do most of these projects?
    Thank you!

    • Patty says:

      Hi Kate,
Yup. Just use air dry clay or something like it and try acrylic paints instead of underglaze. Lot cheaper too! Have fun,
      Patty

Thank you for providing step by step instructions on so many wonderful art projects! I am a busy Art Docent in a 1st grade class and turn to your site often. We did the winter scene a few weeks ago and the kids had so much fun!

    Hi Patty,

Love your site! Last Thursday I ordered 4 lesson plan packets using PayPal… I got the confirmation email from PayPal acknowledging the order, but no links to download them. My husband’s email address is linked with the PayPal account, so I’ve been checking his email account looking for the links. Are they sent in a separate email? I read that sometimes there is a lag-time getting the links, but thought I’d probably have them by now. I’m not worried, just checking in! :)

    Thanks!
    Jessica
