I visited Alaska two years ago and discovered the art of Dawn Gerety. Her abstract and colorful depictions of the Alaskan wildlife combine graphic qualities such as patterns and lines and art techniques like texture and watercolor wash.
This is a great project to do when you need a lesson that requires only a few supplies. To create texture with salt, it’s important to use watercolor paper and watercolor paint. But if you don’t have watercolor paper or paints, you can still do this lesson with just white paper and markers.
I included a few Student Learning Objectives for you to consider should you need them, handouts to encourage the drawing and pattern-creating plus a student gallery to see what 6th grade kids created.
