This 2nd grade lesson plan focuses on VALUE, TEXTURE & COLOR and requires 3 @40 minute sessions.
Eric Carle’s, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, is a bright, colorful homage to artist Marc Franz. Perfect for second graders and takes 2 hours total to complete.
Reading the book to your class is a great way to introduce the lesson and can be an easy tie-in for a quick art criticism activity. After reading, choose a page from the book and ask students: “How do you feel about the artist’s use of color; do you like it or not? Why?” Model a response and make sure to justify your opinion to help students avoid simple, one word answers. You can use either a class discussion format or ask students to turn and talk to each other. Whether or not they like it is not as important as them evaluating the artwork and providing evidence for their option.
This 10 page art lesson plan includes:
Drawing, cutting & background assembly instruction
About artist Franz Marc
6 step horse drawing guide
National Core Art Standards for 2nd grade
I Can Statements
Common Core Standards for 2nd grade
