This lesson is based on the illustrations that Mary Blair created for the Disney short film The Little House. In this lesson, students will create their own Victorian-style house using geometric shapes as a base for the house, adding on contrasting paper shapes for the main features and will finish off the collages with paint pen lines to add detail and interest.
Mary Blair (1911-1978) was an illustrator and animator best known for her work as a concept designer at Disney. She designed sets for the It’s a Small World ride at Disneyland and worked on the films Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella. Blair brought a new, more modern style to Disney Studios, using color in innovative ways in her illustration by using unnatural colors with strong contrast. She also illustrated several Little Golden books that are still in print today.
