FIRST GRADE - AGE 6

Paint strokes become smoother
Understands line and shape
Can follow directed line drawings well
Can mix primary colors to make secondary colors
Can create art with paper shapes

SECOND GRADE- AGE 7

Mix secondaries from primaries
Follow line drawings well
Can draw from observation (simple images)
Use scissors well enough for most projects
Can form great pinch pots and add lots of details using the “scratch-attach” method.

THIRD GRADE - AGE 8

Able to hold a drawing tool
Create “brain bowls” and pinch pots with clay
Knows the difference between warm and cool colors
Use liquid watercolors well and are beginning to use pan watercolors
Draws easily with oil pastels

FOURTH GRADE - AGE 9

Able to weave, create coil pots & build paper mache forms
Better at tempera paint than with watercolor. Make the switch from liquid watercolors to pan watercolors now.
Love to draw realistic subjects like animals and buildings.

FIFTH GRADE - AGE 10

Love to learn new drawing skills
Can handle a variety of ceramic techniques
Still struggle with pan watercolors unless using a resist
Most everyone can work with tempera paint and are ready for acrylics.

SIXTH GRADE - AGE 11

Like to do more “advanced” work such as detailed line work and shading.
Very capable with most form-based projects, especially ceramics.
Would prefer to use technology over any other medium.
