Spring Daffodils Art Project

One of the loveliest aspects of Spring are the delightful surprises that emerge from the earth. Daffodils and tulips are the first hints of warmer weather and come at a time when we are all craving a splash of color.

This art project for kids is designed to show how to draw an individual stem of daffodils to be drawn alone or bunched in a vase.

Make sure to download the DAFFODIL DRAWING GUIDES (keep scrolling) and then try one of more of the lesson ideas below…

PROJECT #1 PAINTED PAPER SPRING DAFFODIL

I was curious how the daffodils would look on textured painted paper. If you don’t know how to make painted paper, you can learn how in this post and video about making this beautiful paper.

Gather a few colors of regular liquid tempera paint, a few sponges or brushes and any type of texture tool.

Create simple yellow, pink, orange and red papers. Allow to dry.

Drawing on Painted Paper

Cut the 12″ x 18″ painted paper in half so you have a collection of 12″ x 9″ papers. This is easier for kids to work with.

Using a good quality crayon like Faber-Castell wax crayons or oil pastels, draw 2-3 spring daffodils on the painted paper. If a child messes up, encourage her to keep going. The extra crayon marks will add a lovely artistic quality.

Cut out the shapes and set aside.

Adding Stems and Leaves to your Spring Daffodils

Using the handout to identify the shapes of the stem and leaves, use a crayon to draw on a selection of colored paper.

Cut out and add details with crayons. For the leaves, I added lines to give the impression of the ridges found in the daffodil leaves.

Project #2 CRAYON & TEMPERA PAINT FLOWERS

The Daffodil Drawing Handout also includes a drawing guide for using the daffodils in a vase, in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.

To do this project, all you need is a 12″ x 15″ piece of white sulphite paper, crayons and cake tempera paint. I used Faber-Castell connector paints and their wax crayons.

Start by drawing the leaves. Look at the daffodil drawing steps to observe how elegant and curvy the leaves are. Place the leaves near the bottom of the page and draw the top of the leaves at the halfway line of the paper.

To draw the daffodils, select a crayon color (perhaps a darker color than yellow so the lines are easier to see) and follow the drawing prompts as outlined in the handout.

Fill the background with color. If you are using Faber-Castell connector paints, you’ll notice that there is a tube of white gouache. Use the gouache to mix with a background color to create a creamy tint.

The paint doesn’t have to be completely smooth. The children will have an opportunity to clean up the light and dark areas when the paint dries.

Paint the spring daffodils and leaves.

After the paint dries completely, children can use the crayons to add any details they think their art would benefit from. Suggestions include adding veins to the leaves, patterns to the flowers and adding a wallpaper look to the background.
