Art Made Easy #003: How to Assess Student Art & Qualities of a Great Art Teacher

Welcome to my third episode of Art Made Easy! Thank you so much for the overwhelming support for the creation of this podcast. I can only say that I have a great line-up of guests and topics to share with you in the upcoming weeks and months.

Today I am interviewing Jessica Balsley from the Art of Education. Jessica and I started our blogging journeys around the same time and our visions for supporting the art ed community have complimented one another. I love how Jessica bridges the gap between providing professional development opportunities and valuable teaching resources with creative vision to her readers. If you are a credentialed art teacher, she is your gal.

In today’s show, Jessica and I talk openly about art assessment. I confess I know nothing of formal assessment tools. She breaks down assessment strategies using art project examples so I can understand.

But here’s the best part of the interview: Jessica reveals how a mindset shift can make a great teacher even greater. This stuff is gold!

I have been listening to your podcasts and have the found them to be informative and validating as a veteran art educator. Many of the comments today really hit home especially those about being true to your inner artist and strengths. I am guilty of Pinterest envy and fretting over what I’m not doing. Jessica gives great insight into art programs, assessment and the art teacher mind.

    • Patty Palmer

Thanks for sharing, Laura. I agree, Jessica really helps put things into perspective. Pinterest envy is not fun. Thanks for listening!

    Dear Patty

Oh wow!! This hit the nail on the head. Its just what I needed. Thank you so so much. I hope I can do the same for other new art teachers one day.

With summer coming to an end, I’m glad i stumbled on this pod cast again to help get me thinking about curriculum design again. Coming up with everything I do in my classroom is both rewarding and extremely tiring.

I tried the link to Jessica’s 100 art projects and it didn’t take me to the download, any chance someone can share that resource with me?

      Hi Faith,
Thanks for listening to the podcast. I think Jessica’s website has undergone some changed so if you go to Artofed.com, she probably has the free resource somewhere on her site. Sorry about that!

Hi, I’m a Mom and part-time educator. I would love to learn from these audio lessons but I’m partially deaf so listening without a visual is a huge challenge.
Any chance this information could be provided in writing too?

    • Patty

      Hi Angela,
I’m so sorry! We don’t offer transcriptions on our podcasts…at least yet. We often will provide downloads and an expanded post based on the podcast. Thanks for the suggestion!

I just discovered this episode and loved it! The link for the download is broken. Any chance you could ask Jessica to provide a new link? 100 lessons is too good to pass up!

    • Patty

I’m so sorry about the link! This episode is a few years old so it’s hard to maintain links form someone else site. Perhaps you can ask the Art of Ed team? I’m sure they would be more than willing to send you an older PDF or something…thanks for listening!
