Watercolor Easter Eggs

Looking for a classroom-friendly alternative to painting eggs this Easter?

This lesson teaches students four different watercolor techniques to create colorful patterns and designs that they can use to decorate their paper eggs.

Let’s get started…

What You’ll Need:

– Waterproof black marker

– Liquid Watercolors

– Wax crayons or oil pastels

– White glue

Watch Patty’s Facebook Live tutorial, demonstrating how to teach this lesson to your classroom of students. This video has been edited from the original Facebook tutorial.

Waterproof Marker

With a waterproof black marker, trace a line around the outside of the egg. Then, use the same marker to draw lines, patterns, and other decorations inside the egg. Once you’ve finished drawing your design, paint the inside of the egg with liquid watercolors.

Wax Resist

With a wax crayon or oil pastel, draw patterns, lines, and other decorations inside your egg. Color in some parts of the drawing or shapes with crayon. Use watercolor to paint over the entire egg with one color. Notice how the paint avoids the crayon, allowing the designs to show through.

Wet-on-Wet & Salting

Dip your paintbrush in water and paint inside an egg shape without picking up any color. Next, dip your brush in one color and brush it over the top of the wet section. Select another color and paint from the bottom up. The colors will spread over the wet surface, blending with each other.

Optional: Sprinkle salt over the wet paint to create a speckled effect.

Glue Resist

Draw egg shapes on a piece of watercolor paper. Use white glue or white glue mixed with India ink to trace over contour line. Then, use the glue to add patterns and decorations to the egg. Once the glue has dried, fill in the egg with watercolor paints.

Love your lessons! What pan watercolors were you using?? thanks in advance!

    • Patty

These look like OOLy Brand 🙂

  • Alyson

    This is awesome, thank you!

  • Mary McManus

I think this lesson is fantastic in the way it can be detailed and intricate for those students invested in it, and it can be simplistic for those who are not as confident in their abilities in art. The different approaches with wax, glue, and just straight watercolor is fantastic as well. I would want to do all of these approaches with my students and just let them explore. Thank you for the series of clearly spelled out approaches and techniques to do with students. I could see a lot of age levels having fun with this.

I love this. Thank you. Keep me posted on any new art projects you do.

    What paper did you use?

    • Patty

For watercolor paper, I typically use a student grade 90 lb watercolor paper. Canson, Faber-Castell are both great choices.

This is a great Easter project. I teach art in a Jewish day school so it is not appropriate to do with my class. However, I plan to do it with my 4 1/2 year old granddaughter when we visit her in Colorado this coming week. Her Mom and other grandmother do the regular egg-dying with her, so this will be a wonderful project that I can do with her in addition! Thank you1

You’re terrific Patty! So real and so much fun!
I’m retired now from teaching CPS k-12 art and just so enJoy watching your presentations.
Thank You for your generous spirit!

These are beautiful! What watercolor palette do you use?

    • Bethany

For this project it looks like the OOLy Brand palette was used. Liquid watercolors are also shown in the photo and were another essential part of Patty’s classroom. They offer superior color and intensity that you can control.

I am very appreciative of these tips and help. In South Africa our exchange rate against the dollar is impossible. I am so thankful to get even small tips to assist my kids at school.
