AME 053 Classroom Management plan

Classroom management is one of the hardest elements of being an art teacher. If you don’t have a plan, philosophy or strategy then art-making takes a back seat.

I believe it’s all about creating an environment in which your students look forward to coming to your class and equally important, creating an environment in which YOU want to come to class.

Here are my 6 factors to consider when making your classroom management plan.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN:

  • Why the environment in the art room is so important to consider
  • How I used my own energy as a basis for my art room environment
  • Why inspiring lessons are so valuable
  • Why you don’t need to overthink the structure of your lessons
  • How I set the expectations in my art room
  • How your ego can work against you and take away perspective
  • Why having trust with children is so important (and how to maintain it)

I really liked this podcast Patty. I think many times we are looking for a system for classroom management and we neglect to look inward first. That really is the key. As always, I learn so much from your podcasts! (And not one thing you said was too woo-woo!) 🙂

just listened to classroom management podcast. I really needed to hear this!! I am a seasoned teacher – taught 6th grade for 10 years, moved to jr high art and LOVED IT!! But I needed full time work. Now I am teaching elementary art and OMG!!!! so much harder!!! I can’t wait for June 24th so I can learn more. Your lessons have saved me!! Thanks!!

I feel your pain! It takes a while to settle into a new dynamic. I’m counting down the days with you!

    Hi Patty,
Thank you so much for all your help and resources! This podcast was great! I have been checking out your website for the past 5 or 6 years when I started teaching pre-K and elementary art lessons at a very small private school. I have since moved to a huge middle school, grades 6-8. I was working with autistic children in a self contained class ( not art related) and since our school has grown so much, they are adding another art teacher-me! I am so excited about this opportunity and wish your sparkler series went through 8th grade! I do plan to use it for my 6th graders though and try to adapt some of the lessons and ideas for the older kids. Do you know of a similar program for those grade levels? Thanks for any input!

The Podcast was very insightful and informative – thank you. Could you please give the link for the book from Michael that you mentioned? I do not see it listed in the show note links.

This was great to listen to. I find that I can easily get swept away by ego and that sometimes drives the tone of the class. I think it’s a great idea to be appreciative, grateful and in tune with what makes me, or the individual happy in their environment. We have that control right? I was already thinking of what gets me excited creatively and how I can lead with that enthusiasm. Thanks again for an amazing podcast!
